Flee From Sexual Sin Part 2

Dear brother,

In the second part of this letter, I want to encourage you to take practical steps so that the Holy Spirit can empower you to live a life that is chaste and is pure before the Lord so you can have the same strength that Joseph had when he fled from Pontiphar’s wife.

God has delivered many, many people (including me) from the bondages and tyranny of sexual sin and he can deliver you too. There are many testimonies of God and His unrelenting love, pursuing and redeeming sinners.

Genesis 39: 6-11

Potiphar turned over everything he had to the care of Joseph and did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Joseph was well-built and good-looking, and after a while his master's wife began to desire Joseph and asked him to go to bed with her. He refused and said to her, “Look, my master does not have to concern himself with anything in the house, because I am here. He has put me in charge of everything he has. I have as much authority in this house as he has, and he has not kept back anything from me except you. How then could I do such an immoral thing and sin against God?” Although she asked Joseph day after day, he would not go to bed with her.

Joseph had the fear of God in him. He was aware that God watched everything that he was doing and this kept him from sinning.

First, please carry this awareness with you everyday. The Lord is always watching and it stops you from sinning.

Second, do more practical things every day that will help you focus on doing good, and the Holy Spirit will empower and bless these acts of faith.

*One example is that I used to indulge in all sorts of movies and music. As a practical step to get free I have stopped watching movies with sex and nudity. It was hard at first but now I do not miss it at all.

Thirdly, accountability is a very powerful tool and many churches use it. There are many apps and groups that can help you leave a life of promiscuity and you only need to invest in one of these groups as you invest in many hobbies that you have.

Fourth, shake off any shame, any hindrance that will stop you from getting freedom from the tyranny and the culture of sexual sin. For many men sexual sins bring deep shame each time you engage. No matter how hard we try to cover the shame, it remains deep inside our souls until the Lord does that surgery to remove it.

If you watch pornography, keep your doors open, sleep with your doors open because secrecy is how porn thrives. I am so happy that I use my phone for the right reasons today. It is such a wonderful tool for encouraging podcasts, praise music, notes to help minister to other men, my work and leisure. When I was addicted to pornography, my mobile phone was my enemy because a lot of what I did was browse porn, but no more!

In addition, read your bible everyday as it has the following effects on people who read it DAILY: Getting drunk- 57% lower odds; Having extramarital sex- 68% lower odds; Viewing porn- 61% lower odds; Gambling- 74% lower odds!  4 Reasons to Read your Bible More

Fifth, confess and boast. James 5:16 says you should, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.” Confess to a brother who is also struggling with this sin. Ask him to pray for you each time you feel the least bit tempted (not afterwards). Then promise to do the same thing for him too.

In 2 Corinthians 12:9-11 it says, "And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.’” This is the opposite of hiding what you’ve been caught in. Be sure you are discreet and never share details, and also be sure to share this with other men, in a private setting, who you sense may also be struggling with this sin. Ask God to rid you of this so you can help other men conquer this pandemic of sin that sadly plagues most Christian men.

Therefore, let’s agree as men, that we will be following these things and anything else He leads us to do to rid ourselves of being a slave to sin, any and all sin. This list is essential in your fight for your sexual purity. You are less likely to indulge yourself in sin if you read your Bible daily, and meditate on it.

God's spirit will win the battle; for your soul and your purity if you put in effort. He will never leave you high and dry. Be honest with Him and take steps to flee. Don’t forget that you will experience significant push back and that the conflict in us represents the old sinful nature which must die.

Dear friend, this is your time to rise out of sexual sin, and like going to the gym, or any new good habit it will take discipline and effort to get out. When you fail, repent, review, make more changes and start again. Stewarding purity and self-control is no different than other areas of your life — career, finances, relationship status or time.

Proverbs 25:28

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Romans 6 15-19

What, then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law but under God's grace? By no means!  Surely you know that when you surrender yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are in fact the slaves of the master you obey—either of sin, which results in death, or of obedience, which results in being put right with God.  But thanks be to God! For though at one time you were slaves to sin, you have obeyed with all your heart the truths found in the teaching you received. You were set free from sin and became the slaves of righteousness.  (I use everyday language because of the weakness of your natural selves.) At one time you surrendered yourselves entirely as slaves to impurity and wickedness for wicked purposes. In the same way you must now surrender yourselves entirely as slaves of righteousness for holy purposes. When you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. What did you gain from doing the things that you are now ashamed of? The result of those things is death! But now you have been set free from sin and are the slaves of God. Your gain is a life fully dedicated to him, and the result is eternal life. For sin pays its wage—death; but God's free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.

As you begin to break free, please consider sharing your victory with other men in a praise report we can post on our Encourager. We will never post your real name or any other way of identifying you.
